Legendary danseuse Amala Shankar passed away in Kolkata at the age of 101 on Friday, 24th June. She was the wife of legendary Indian dancer and choreographer Uday Shankar. Amala Shankar got introduced to the world of dancing in 1930, during a trip to France for International Colonial Exhibition in Paris, where she accidentally met her guru and future husband Uday Shankar, then30 years old was present there with his troupe for a show.

Amala were 11 years old, totally unaware of what fate holds for her. Shankar, asked her to try out a few steps and twirl a stick in the air. Amala excelled every movement and postures, leaving Uday Shankar amazed and that's when he realized she'll be a dancer. And, that’s how her journey began as a dancer in the Shankar troupe when women from respectable families were given the authority to learn Indian classical dance and perform on stage.

As per the reports, Amala Shankar's family said, she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Amala Shankar's granddaughter took to her twitter handle and posted, Today my Thamma left us at the age of 101. We just celebrated her birthday last month. Feeling so restless that there is no flight from Mumbai to Kolkata. Heartbroken.

Sreenanda Shankar further added, May her soul Rest in peace. This is the end of an era. Love you Thamma. Thank you for everything.

May her soul rest in peace and may God give strength to the family.
