Consumption of ganja or cannabis in any form is illegal in India. Currently, the Bollywood industry is under scanner for drug consumption, bigwigs from the industry were also arrested for smoking pot. As the Narcotics Buero is arresting people for purchasing or smoking marijuana. On the other hand, some temples in North Karnataka are serving weed as prasad to devotees. Cannabis is considered to be sacred over there.

Sounds unbelievable right? Bit it's true. Also, if we look at the ancient history Indians and Cannabis have a history until it was declared illegal in the later years.

As per Sharana, Aruda, Shaptha and Avadhuta traditions, devotees consume cannabis aka ganja in different forms, in the hope to achieve enlightenment.

Gangadhar Nayak a member of the temple committee, while talking about the wide usage of marijuana said: “The devotees and saints believe this sacred grass shows the path to enhancing knowledge of spirituality.”

“During the fair, anybody can come here and smoke. While some eat ganja after boiling it, others consume it like tobacco powder,” he further added.

Even today, we find saints smoking ganja in the hope to achieve the blessings of lord shiva. Yet it's illegal in the country.

While there is still taboo around the usage of marijuana in India, certain countries like Canada and South Africa have legalised marijuana consumption for recreational purposes cause of its medical benefits.
