We are fighting a pandemic and trying to keep ourselves safe from the deadly virus. People are trying to buy fresh products for consumption and even trying to grab the best sanitizers, mask to combat the virus and COVID-19 positive patients are praying for the best treatment with effective equipment as we don't have a vaccine yet! 

The West Bengal government has ordered an investigation, as there are allegations of corruption in purchasing of medical equipment to combat Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

Mamata Banerjee led government has introduced a three-member committee directed by the state home secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay. They will investigate the allegations and submit a report to the chief secretary.

 A senior official of the state government said, “The state health department has acquired various items in the past few months to fight the pandemic. More than Rs 2,000 crore has been invested. The allegations related to corruption in this huge expenditure is bizarre, certain allegations are serious which includes purchasing products from certain agencies bypassing rules." 

Bengal government has announced free treatment for COVID-19 patients in government hospitals. So, the urge for medical equipment and kits were purchased in bulk. Generally, the West Bengal Medical Services Corporation Ltd purchases medicines and medical equipment. However, due to the pandemic, the Mamata Banerjee led government had introduced a committee for purchasing PPE equipment and medicines to avoid delay.
