On 14th April, PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation and announced the extension of lockdown till 3rd May to halt the spread of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak.

India has a population of 1.3 billion and two-thirds of the people live in poverty which is 884 million. Since the country is under lockdown, people have been told to stay indoors. But for the daily wage earners staying indoors means no income for the next three weeks.

While the fortuned ones are complaining about not getting strawberries, freshly baked bread, settling for cauliflower instead of broccoli, chocolates in the market which is their biggest concern in the hour of crisis.

Millions of poverty-stricken people and daily wage earners are struggling to feed their families. The fear of hunger is killing them more than the risk of COVID-19. Some will run out of food in the coming days because of their empty pockets.

However, the Central government has assured to help the daily wage earners and people who rely on the street for food and shelter. Not just the State Government, political parties, NGO’s and celebrities, but every citizen of the country who has sufficient resources to help feed the ones starving.

A verse in the bible says about helping the underprivileged “whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deeds”. Or on numerous occasions, you might have heard your parents saying “if you help someone, don’t brag about it”

But, the current scenario reflects a harsh reality that many people are donating or feeding the poor to gain acknowledgement from their fellow netizens or to ride on social media fame. It seems like some of the youth will stop doing the good work if they’re not getting praised. Stop treating them as content for your social media handles to get likes.

People are busy clicking pictures of the people while distributing food and essential rather than noticing the ones waiting in the queue are uncomfortable getting clicked. Stop just stop capturing every second! Start living those moments because the people who are going to spam you with likes, won’t even read the long caption you wrote. They’ll just scroll down and move on to the next post or will have a good laugh reading any meme but they might not laud your deed but can tag you as a ‘show off’.

Recently, a television star who was seen donating food packages and basic essentials to the underprivileged. The whole act didn't go well with Jay Bhanusali who called it a ‘PR stunt’ and suggested they should have left their mobile phones at home.

If one truly wishes to help the underprivileged who are unable to put food on their tables. Give whatever you can and make an effort to understand their problems, that might not give you fame on social media but blessings and love.
