West Bengal seems to have controlled the spread of COVID-19 with five deaths and 189 positive cases till date. However, West Bengal’s protocol for reporting the Coronavirus disease fatalities has been questioned. As per the data of state government, it has tested only 1889 patients till April 9.

On Monday, the state government said, it would consult a team of expert doctors before linking any fatality to the coronavirus disease, responding to the allegations which affirm Bengal government is suppressing information about the pandemic.

According to the reports, unlike other states, the West Bengal government is hesitant to attribute the deaths of patients with health conditions like heart disease or diabetes to the virus. However, health experts believe that these conditions make COVID-19 disease worse. These deaths are attributed to COVID-19 in other states.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said  "we have formed a committee of five doctors who will ensure the actual cause of death. They are the experts, I am not. We do not want to create panic among the people. Please trust the doctors".

On 5th April, Bengal government issued an order, that doctors signing death certificates needs to fill out a form and need to attach 24 test reports, which will be later scrutinized by the committee of doctors.
